Dear returning campers and newcomers:

On behalf of the 2010 MUUSA Planning Council, I hope you are having a wonderful start to your year and that you, too, are eagerly looking forward to Summer Assembly.  Our intergenerational Unitarian Universalist camp will again be held at the YMCA Trout Lodge outside of Potosi, Missouri.  This years dates will be Sunday, July 4th to Saturday, July 10th.

Our wonderful Planning Council has been working diligently since last summer.  Our 2010 Council is a great group with a broad history of both lifelong and fresh camp experiences and so many talents and diverse perspectives.  At our fall planning meeting this past October, our council gathered to prepare for our upcoming week-long retreat.  We have an exciting week planned, filled with strong traditions and infused with new experiences.  We hope you will join us for a week of laughing, playing, learning, dancing, worshiping, singing, and so much more.

We are thrilled to announce expansion in 2010.  Over the summer and fall, members of the planning council worked closely with the YMCA Trout Lodge representatives to arrange for new housing in the neighboring Camp Lakewood property.  Our Jr. High and Sr. High programs will have a more suitable space with dorm-like bedrooms and large great rooms for building community.  Our 18-20 year olds will also enjoy a cabin and adults and families will have more housing available in the Forestview cabins and North Hall.

Our informative 12 page brochure will be availalbe online shortly. In the meanwhile, navigate our main menu on the website to learn about the offerings for 2010.  After learning more about MUUSA's housing, programming, workshops, and other information provided on this website and in the brochure, the next step is to either login with your existing account (previously created for use of the MUUSA forums) or create a new account by clicking here. Soon, there will be a registration form link on the top to sign up for what I'm sure will be a fantastic summer vacation!  We'll be opening online registration in just a couple days!

What do Unitarian Universalists believe about ...

Hell: Unitarian Universalists Are Good For Nothing: A UU view of hell. Orthodox faith insists the fear of eternal damnation and the promise of heaven are the only motivations to turn inveterate sinners into good people. Not UUs.

God: We’re not a religion that says there is no God; and we’re not the religion that says you must believe in God. Can there really be a faith community like that?

Prayer: Many of us are uncomfortable with the words “God” and “prayer.” Often this rejection comes from outgrowing or having to “unlearn” what our old religious tradition taught us. Can we claim or reclaim this word and practice?

Anges: Angels still speak to us-- even Unitarian Universalists.

Miracles: What constitutes a Unitarian Universalist miracle?

Rev. Dr. Daniel ÓConnell is the lead minister at Eliot Unitarian Chapel in Saint Louis and a lifelong UU. He currently serves as president of the Central Midwest District of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and was appointed by the UUA Board of Trustees to serve as a member of the Fifth Principle Task Force to help recommend the future configuration and content of General Assembly. Returning campers will remember Daniel from last summer, when he led the Friday vespers service and a workshop, Articulating Your UU Faith. Rev. ÓConnell authored the UA curriculum, Nuu Men: An Exploration of Masculine Spirituality, and presented a workshop, The Core of the UU Faith, for a Prairie Star District UU Minister’s Association meeting. Daniel’s community work includes serving as volunteer chaplain to the Kirkwood, Missouri Police Department and as a member of local interfaith organizations. Rev. ÓConnell is married and the father of two girls, ages 9 and 13. He is a private pilot, and his other interests include bicycling, motorcycling, playwriting, and archery.
